Delegate Comstock's "Secret Ballot Protection Act" and "KEEP Secure Act" To Protect Employee Rights And Privacy Signed By Governor

McLean, VA- Governor McDonnell has signed Delegate Comstock's House Bill 1385, the "Secret Ballot Protection Act," and House Bill 1931, "KEEP Secure Act: Keep Employees Emails and Phones Secure Act."

Delegate Barbara Comstock released the following statement on the signing by the Governor of both bills:

"The signing of the Governor of these bills is a victory for the rights of workers and for protecting employees in the workplace. Virginia continues to lead the way with strong right to work laws that will protect the secret ballot, protect employee information and protect our strong pro-jobs climate in Virginia."

"'The Secret Ballot Protection Act will strengthen workers' rights and freedoms and puts us on the side of Virginia workers and their right to a secret ballot. Democratic Presidential candidate George McGovern called efforts to eliminate the secret ballot 'a disturbing and undemocratic overreach.' With the signing of this legislation, workers will be protected from intimidation, harassment and potential threats to vote in a certain way."

"Passage of 'The KEEP Secure Act' will keep employees' emails, cell phones and phone information, and work schedules out of the hands of third parties unless there is a legal obligation to provide the information. Now, employees privacy will be secured and employers will be protected against demands from third parties trying to get information beyond what is legally required in workplace elections."
