Korean Independence Day
Thursday, August 15th marked the Anniversary of South Korea's Independence. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the Republic of Korea, all Korean Americans and all those of Korean descent around the world, on the celebration of their Independence Day on August 15.

In the years since the founding of the Republic of Korea, we have shared a common belief in the values of democracy and freedom.  Here throughout the Commonwealth, Korean Americans have contributed greatly to our businesses, sciences, sports, the arts and public service.  Best wishes to all on this year's Korean Independence Day.
Proposed I-495 North Shoulder Lane
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) plans to begin work in 2014 to improve travel conditions where the northbound 495 Express Lanes join the regular lanes.

The $20 million project will allow traffic to travel on the left shoulder of northbound I-495 from where the 495 Express Lanes end to the George Washington Parkway, a stretch of about 1.5 miles.  The existing shoulder will be rebuilt to accommodate traffic.

The shoulder will be open to all traffic during peak travel periods.  A lane use management system, with green arrows and red "X's," similar to the lane-control system on I-66, will alert travelers when the shoulder is available.

All travelers and buses will benefit from the new capacity and improved merge.  There will be no barrier separation between the shoulder lane and the regular Beltway lanes, ensuring easy access for travelers.  Construction of the shoulder project is expected to begin summer 2014, pending approval by the Federal Highway Administration. The estimated completion date for this project is early 2015.
Grand Opening of Wal-Mart In Tysons Corner
The new Wal-Mart in Tysons Corner officially opened its doors on Wednesday, August 14th.  I had the pleasure of attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony with Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce president, Lisa Huffman,
Wal-Mart Regional Market Manager Yaeunda Pou, store manager Marty Reighard and regional director of operations Bob Davis.

Wal-Mart will be a great corporate partner to the community and will provide a convenient one-stop, 24-hour place for busy commuters and families to shop in our area. In conjunction with the store opening, Wal-Mart officials also donated grants to Jill's House and Westbriar Elementary and the Capital Area Food Bank.

Young Women's Leadership Program With Donna Brazile

Participants of the Young Women's Leadership Program had a great time meeting with Donna Brazile at the Great Falls Library on August 13th. We had a chance to talk with Donna Brazile about her career as an adjunct professor, author, syndicated columnist, television political commentator for CNN, campaign manager for Al Gore in 2000 and former interim National Chair of the Democratic National Committee.  We discussed how she maintains a work-life balance, always enjoys trying new things and is inspired by random acts of kindness.  Thank you Donna for taking the time to share your stories with us- what an inspiration!

Walker Road Project Underway In Great Falls
I wanted to share with you the latest press release from the Great Falls Citizens Association concerning the Walker Road "Diet" Project. Preliminary work on the Walker Road "Diet" project began the week of August 5th, and the project is expected to be completed by mid-November 2013.

Work will be done weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  No nighttime work is planned, and weekend work is not scheduled at this time.  However, weekend work may be necessary if there are schedule conflicts with paving and striping subcontractors near completion of the project.
Drivers can expect periodic right lane closures during construction.  However, work will be sequenced so that there is continued access to businesses in the area.  For more information on the project see the GFCA website: http://gfca.org/transportation.html.
Congressman Frank Wolf To Host STEM Education Career Fair with National Science Foundation
Congressman Frank Wolf (R-VA) recently announced that he will be hosting a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Education Career Fair on September 27-28 at the Dulles Town Center in Loudoun County with the National Science Foundation.

More than 50 exhibitors have already committed to participating, including NOAA, National Institute of Standards and Technology, National Institute of Health, NASA and the Friends of the National Zoo. The fair is free and open to the public.  More information will be posted on http://wolf.house.gov as it becomes available.
